Unknown by many in the UK but well know and controversial in the States, former NBA player Dennis Rodman, has reportedly signed a deal to serve as a celebrity spokesperson for Curacao-licensed OnlyPoker.com. The 48-year-old former Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons player signed the sponsorship deal last week with the online poker site currently displaying a photo of Rodman featuring the caption ‘The Bad Boy Is Back’.

Many online poker rooms in the North Americas just love to feature former sports stars and often the more controversial the star the better the reception they seem to get.  Within Europe the tendency is for not trying to entice potential players to their online poker sites through personality, but by offering tempting prizes, free plays and bonuses etc., all of which seems to work better in their culture.

We all have to start somewhere and with the massive growth of online poker, more new players are coming on to the scene. With some online poker sites like 888.com you can take part in practice games to help you to get started without risking cash.

When you learn poker, at first it’s just a game. You don’t really realise how deep and complex it is, let’s face it you are new to the game. You’re clueless; you’re being dealt two cards, you don’t know what’s good and what’s bad, what’s right and what’s wrong, so you just get on with it. You start developing what is basically trial and error and after a while you realise that going all-in with 7-2 isn’t a good thing to do. Over a period of time things start making sense. Concentration and discipline are very important and practice makes perfect.

OK It’s in Canada but will this be followed by many other stations taking up the challenge of televising online poker tourneys? The new network is targeting the Canadian market and is set to launch early next month featuring programming from the last three years alongside original content and features, so we will be able to see some of the great tournaments of yesteryear. It is estimated that there are 3.5 million poker players in Canada and the network will allow them to watch streaming programmes and also choose from archived content to view on demand.

Televising poker tournaments is not new but looking through some interesting archives will prove to be a hit with most online poker players. It is planned that the broadcasts will feature action from the Stampede Classic in Calgary, classic heads-up matches between Brad ‘Yukon’ Booth and Huckleberry Seed from the Canadian Open Poker Championships. The network is also planning to feature documentary programming showcasing the Canadian Poker Tour’s Invitational Finals in the Dominican Republic and the 2007 Stampede Classic. Online poker players just cannot wait!
