Poker is a group of card games which share similar rules governing betting and, in most cases (though not each and every occasion), similar rankings when it comes to card hands. The first three of these rankings – which determine which player wins – are listed (from the highest down) as follows:

* The ultimate hand is known as the “Straight Flush”, which is a run of cards, all in the same suit (clubs, diamonds, hearts or spades) in numerical order; for example, the five, six, seven, eight and nine of diamonds. In the unlikely event of two players in the same game both holding a “Straight Flush”, the winner would be the player whose cards ran to the highest number.

* The second best hand in poker is “Four of a Kind”. As the name suggests, this involves the hand featuring four of each of the same number cards from each of the suits. As with the straight flush, in the event of two players both holding “Four of a Kind”, the highest number would prevail (for example, four jacks would beat four sixes).

* The third best hand in poker is called the “Full House”. A “Full House” occurs when a hand of five cards consisting of three of the same number from three suits is joined by a pair of two identical numbers from two others suits (for example, three fives and two sixes). Again, should two players have a “Full House”, the victor would be the one whose three matching cards are of the highest numerical value.
